I see to have an unusual number of left-handed friends on Facebook. Makes me wonder what the percentage is like here.

    So:

    ExecutionerFive, WHICH HAND!?!?!?

I should clarify: If you write with the same hand that you use for using food utensils, we're gonna say that's your dominant hand, even if you can, say, do another minor task with the opposite hand such as use your mouse or throw a ball.

In my case, I write and eat with my left hand, play pool left handed, but mouse with my right, so I put myself firmly in the left-handed column.

Right-handed primarily, although I have a lot of left-handed habits such as wearing a watch (when I do) on my right arm because it makes more sense to me. I've practiced doing a number of things left-handed, but for writing I still use my right hand exclusively.

I'm right handed unless I'm playing hockey, in which case I am inexplicably a leftie. But I still think that's firmly in the right-handed column.

Right-handed. My dad is left-handed, the only one in my immediate family. When I asked about it as a wee lass, he said it was because the person who taught him to write was left-handed.

And then I kindof felt bad, because my grandmother has a deformity in her right hand where she has only three fingers, all immobile, and I had forgotten about it.

Hockey is Canadian, and Canadians are just Brits with the serial numbers filed off, and they drive on the other side of the road in Britain, so that's perfectly logical.

Left has the most dexterity for me - I paint and write with my left. I favour the right for sports and throwing punches, and it has more power. I can swap to a certain extent.

I am a leftie. And I use my left hand for writing, too.

I first used a computer mouse in my right hand because the mouse cord on the original Mac (yes) would not reach over to the left of the keyboard (or maybe I was doing it wrong). Because of this I am exclusively right-handed when it comes to using computer mice. This ended up working out well for me, as leftie mice are not exactly common.

Lefty here. I used to use a Wacom tablet instead of a mouse, so I could do it with my left hand. Was much easier. But then I started having laptops instead of desktops so I haven't needed a tablet in a while.

I do a lot of things right-handed, but I can only write and crochet left-handed. A lot of my righty skills are just adaptations to living in a world geared for the right-handed, like scissors.

I chose lefty. I write, brush my teeth, shave, and eat / cut with my left, and do everything else with my right (including using a mouse and playing guitar). My right leg is my kicking leg as well.

That's true and it's something I do quite often, actually.

Though I use a mouse right-handed with no difficulty, when it comes to drawing with it I am more than a bit wobbly and if I'm using a Wacom tablet with stylus, it's always left-handed. The art side of my brain is firmly a leftie.

Yeah, if I'm using a touchpad, I use my left finger, and am quite adept at drawing with it. Freeform drawing with my right hand is awful.

No problem doing fast-twitch FPS games with my right hand, oddly enough. You'd think that'd require similar precision to drawing, but I think that drawing and aiming must use different parts of the brain.

I was left handed until I was 19. I was in a car accident and destroyed much of my left arm but my hand was still functional. I still write with my left and, but since I no longer have an elbow joint and have significantly less strength my right hand has taken over over doing almost everything else. I still consider myself left handed since I can't write for shit with my right hand still and I'd do any sports things left handed, but all the everyday things are done with my right hand now. The human body is crazy.

I'm right-handed, but family is divided exactly half and half: three right-handers, three left-handers. It got fascinating to figure out where everyone should sit at the table when the family with a few left-handers in it would come over for dinner.

Oh haha, this question. Well. One of my childhood nicknames was, "Bad Lefty" cuz I was the only one in my family and er that wasn't good. Shit, I think I was slightly bullied for it even because I remember actively letting my ability to write with the left languish and confrontations at the dinner table...Huh, that's a bit of a revelation. Didn't really think about it and remember til now. But anyhow~! These days I'm fluidly ambidextrous, but writing with right and pre'much everything else with left. It's my stronger hand, my fighting hand, I can beat you in an arm wrestling match with this left hand of golden gloriousness~! /lolololkidding but yeah, I definitely favor it

EDIT: Annnd I voted without much thought so that's wrong up there. ^^;;Sorry to skew results, forgot until I started writing the post which was which until deeper introspection made the reality known. My bad, there.

Both my Dad and I are a bit weird about it. Typically if people ask I'll say I'm righthanded for simplicity or partially ambidextrous if they want a little more information.
I'll write with my right hand if I need to write quickly but I can switch to my left hand if my right gets tired. I'm slower but it's a hell of a lot neater. I eat with either hand with no problem. I'm a little more comfortable using my left hand when using a mouse. I always open doors with my left hand.
When I played soccer as a kid I was always put into left or middle positions because I was hell of a lot better at kicking with my left than most of the team.
I shave using both hands. That might not be too impressive itself, but I shave my legs like a flamingo. I don't like sitting down or touching the wall to shave so WOO balance act! That combined with poor eyesight and I could probably join the circus.
And that's why Rot should have taken gymnastics. Wait, what was I talking about?

Right handed for writing and almost all sports activities, but I use my right hand for my fork and my left hand for my knife (people say it's weird), and when I play goalie in hockey I put the catcher on the left hand and blocker on the right hand, which I've also heard is backwards for a rightie.

  29. Marchhhare Armchair Designer

No, that's actually really common. The hand placed at the top of your stick is the one that has the most control over the puck movement, so if your dominant hand is right, there's a good chance you shoot left in hockey.

I don't recall the source, but I once read an article that stated the majority of Canadian players shoot left and the majority of American players shoot right despite the percentage of left vs. right hand dominance being the same in both countries. The stated reason for this is that hockey is typically the first sport most Canadians learn how to play, so they're taught to place their dominant hand on the top of their stick (where it provides the most control), resulting in most right-handed people shooting left and vice versa. In the US, kids will usually learn other sports like baseball first where the non-dominant hand is placed at the bottom of the bat. When they start playing hockey, they go with what they know, so right-handed Americans tend to shoot right.

Of course, you can teach yourself to shoot either way, and highly-skilled players exist who are right-handed and shoot left, right-handed and shoot right, left-handed and shoot left, and left-handed and shoot right. IIRC, both Gretzky and Lemieux are right-handed, but Gretzky shot left, and Lemieux shot right.

No, that's also pretty normal. Most people are taught to catch with their non-dominant hand, so if you're right-handed, you'd want your trapper on your left hand and hold your stick with your right hand.
