Almost everyone(real people not TV people) agrees that the shooter did something wrong(even if it wasnt illegal.) The disagreement comes in when this is being hyped as a "race issue" when many people think it was actually a "scared, stupid, wanna be cop" issue. I personally hope the shooter spends some time in jail - but Im sick of the media being dishonest(old pictures and tricky edits) and Im sick of attention whores using the families grief and anger to to get attention.
It's both. Zimmerman seems likely to have been motivated at least partially by race, but even if he wasn't, the reluctance of the local police to prosecute him absolutely is about race in large part. The tricky edit thing is dumb, but it's also one instance and it's from the freaking Today show; if that bothers you I hope you're just as concerned about the kind of yellow journalism going on re: bat boy. As far as "old pictures" go, are you talking about the long-ago discredited "thug" pictures that were circulating via email forward and Fox News dipshits? And either way, does it matter? It's not dishonest to show whatever picture of the kid they feel like showing, because it doesn't change the story in the least. This bothers me when it happens with this kind of story, but I haven't really seen much of it with this one. To whatever extent it is happening, though, it's shitty, but also kind of inevitable. It doesn't discredit legitimate news coverage, in any case.
Its is NOT comparable to bat boy. Bat boy was an obvious gag by a marginal rag. I had no respect for that paper but it doesnt bother me because that paper bore essentially no public trust. If anyone bought that paper(was it the "Star"?) it was for giggles and light reading. I a big proponent of good journalism and I believe in holding journalists to high standards. If a media source presents itself as a real news source we should call it out when it misrepresents.

Well, since this turned into the race thread... I linked to the Ta-nehisi piece rather than the original, because it sucks and is terrible. There is a fascination modern racists have with "straight talk" and "speaking the truth." I'm led to believe that it comes from a siege mentality ("Well, nobody else was saying it!") but it is absolutely infuriating to see someone purport to quantify the "impaired development" of an enormous swathe of the world population, stupid and useless as that may be, and then literally in the same article to write the sentence "in my experience, about 5% of blacks..." Why you gonna be a racist and then trip all over yourself in the same paragraph?
The thing I find hilarious is that Derbyshire has been almost saying something this out-and-out racist for years. It's like he finally got old enough to not care anymore.

Hey, it's kind of refreshing to see that kind of honesty at least. Normally racists start sentences with "I'm not racist, but..." so it's kind of nice to see one lead off with "I'm racist, and..." for a change. For a long time he was like Charles Murray - clearly racist to anyone who wasn't a Republican, but not so blatantly obvious or foten that Republicans have to disown him.
