Are any of you using a VOIP virtual or hosted PBX system in your workplace? If so, can you tell me who you're using and whether you're happy with them? Thanks! P.S. We have 8x8 now (not happy) and RingCentral (evaluating, probably not happy).
we (unsurprisingly) use Lync It's pretty slick, my desk phone is anywhere my laptop is, or my cell phone is for that matter.
Thanks, Guido Jones. That looks like it might be overkill for us, since we have only 4 employees in one office. Plus, I can't understand it. :)
What do you need to do with a PBX? A single number that rings every phone? A hosted solution is probably the best, because you do not want to be responsible for fixing voip problems under time pressure. This of course will make your phones dependant on internet reliaiblity though.
We also need the ability to transfer calls to each other, have voicemail, etc. That's been our sad experience - for whatever reason, we have shitty call quality with 8x8, even though our Internet connection is really solid. Quality with RingCentral is much better, but its autoattendant and other features are somewhat lacking. 8x8 is more sophisticated in that regard.
Have you looked at Asterisk? I'm running it at home, so I can't really make any grand claims about how suitable it would be for your purposes but it's FOSS and there's a complete distro built around it (AsteriskNOW, see the downloads page) that includes the FreePBX GUI. It might be worth looking at.
It's tough to configure by hand; I've never used FreePBX though, so I've no idea how much easier that makes the process. I'm just saying, it's free so the only cost to trying it is time.
I am aware of Asterisk, and I wish I had time to roll my own phone system at work. I might screw around with it at home, though.
