Hah I got that ending, it's hilarious.

I've only had one move scroll drop so far, I guess I need to up it to hard for that to be less rare. The 90% pistol reduction is funny because you have to a)Be close enough to a guard so that he swings his gun at you instead of moving back and firing b)Since his swing is high and your block is low to the ground it doesn't connect so you don't get credit until you move to a higher elevation or an incline and block with actual contact. Even if I knew that you had to block the rifle butt and not the bullet I never would have figured out the elevation part since what kind of insane game would take that into consideration?

From what I gather it's supposed to always be the previous move in the chain. But nobody has posted about it (all the searches for base move are for help on the "base move on enemy in the air" skills) so I donno. It's not that big of a deal, the last time I went to so much effort was to get the kick an enemy to death one and all it does is make me do a silly taunt.

Oh.. that guy's actually a really good source of the Adamantine Martial Arts style... which is pretty damn cool. You should kill him at some point.

Nope. Those move conditions are translated as "Kill an enemy while sitting on the ground" in the US translation. Also, that requirement is absolute bullshit.

Yep, that's usually (but not always) the payoff for those. Some, however, can lead to some pretty awesome attacks (most of those being Unarmed stances).

That scene, by the by, is actually a callback to a similar scene in WotS 1, where you can get tied to train tracks and run over... but you can also be saved by one of the faction heads.

The Way of the Samurai games love making callbacks to previous titles. There's dialog lines referencing other games, pictures of previous characters can be found scattered around town (hell, sometimes you'll even find the character themselves), and a good amount of the swords and styles were used by an NPC in one of the older games.

In fact, that stance and sword you start with have been the default weapon and moveset for every game since the series' inception... with some variations between games, of course; moves have been added or dropped, and the sword's name (and in one case, model) has been changed once or twice... I believe it was the Chuyo-tou in WotS 1, the Mumei-tou in WotS 2, the Moderate Blade in WotS 3, and the Basal Blade in WotS 4.

Why yes, I am a huge fan of this series, and have played it since the first game came out. Can ya tell? XD
  7. Indeed!
It always amuses me how Sensei manages to make her way back with each new game (kinda missed her in WotS2 though).

Well, you could still get her model in WotS 2 if you entered the Character Model code correctly... but that was a major pain in the ass to get working.

You know, one thing that makes me sad is that I can't get the classic grey hakama in WotS 4. That outfit has been in all of the games except this one. I seem to be the only one that noticed it (or cared), but I liked that outfit; it was a nice, neutral tone, and I always liked carrying Kenji (the default protagonist) through the games (though I did add accessories - a straw hat, a drinking gourd, and a twig or toothpick - to the outfit in 3). Though... someone on GameFAQs put forth a fan theory that the brother Sensei's looking for is in fact Kenji... I'd buy it.

And yeah... the only game I haven't played is the Old West spinoff, Samurai Western (which, IIRC, is the first time a Spring Harvest-like mechanic appeared in the series). I've found a used copy of it before, but it turned out to be unplayable due to disk scratches.

Continuing the trip down Nostalgia Lane, you know what I kind of miss? The Two Player versus mode in the first game. I mean, I know we have the invader system in 4, but it's just not the same. It would still work really well, too... Actually, I just realized they do kinda reference it in the Light of Hope path with one of the fights, as one of them is done from a 2d perspective, similar to how the 2P mode in the first game worked.

you can buy the legendary scroll from casino, just need to exchange cash to coin and then buy with coins.

but I got it drop a few times on hard difficulty by killing the kogure(xenophobic eye patch dude)..

As an alternative to buying chips outright, you can also get them by playing Poker in the Casino (though, I've heard its a different game in the Japanese version; I doubt this, myself, but Pheriannath may be able to confirm this). Poker is, unfortunately, the only game you can play... there are slots and roulette tables, but the people manning 'em won't let you play. It's a shame, since I love gambling in Yakuza.

Two things, though. One, the payout increases as the crime rate gets worse... at Terrible, you get a 50% increase in payout. Secondly, the Double Up game is a pain in the ass, and you probably shouldn't bother with it in most cases.

  11. I don't quite remember, since I gambled very little in the casino - I spent most of my gambling hours playing Hanafuda at the other gambling den. And I closed the casino down during my last playthrough.

But when I get it open again I'll be sure to let you know!

...You know, I never have been able to play Hanafuda well. And it's a damn shame, because from what I can glean of it, it's really fun. Like, go buy a deck of my own IRL and play with friends fun.

not sure if the dealer cheats or not, but whenever I get a straight and I do a double down, dealer always draw Queen+.. I only won one double down with like 60 coins on the line, even that time dealer pulls out a King and I got an Ace..

Ok, completed two more playthroughs. One on Normal, where I did the Prajna path, and by the end I had a Life & Death sword with 350 strength. I started the playthrough with a sword at 65 strength. So it's not too hard to grind out powerful swords. I also nabbed a slightly weaker sword off an invader, but it's got three Big Shot charms so I'm definitely hanging on to it.

My next playthrough I did on Hard and it ended pretty quickly, as I got myself on the "secret" path, but hadn't done the necessary groundwork for it to be successful, But hey, it unlocked Harikiri difficulty! Now I guess it's just all about unlocking all the events and endings before doing the "true" path again.

On the plus side, even though you failed the Light of Hope path, the style you get from the guy at the end's pretty damn nice, assuming you got it.

Glad to hear you're enjoying the game!

Kyoji Style. It's a One-Handed style dropped by the Kinugawa double.... the moveset has a ton of wide-ranging spins, so it's really good against packs of enemies, and devastating in Spring Harvest.

I did figure out what I was doing wrong with the base move thing, I had to actually perform the entire combo not just the move preceding it. Duh.
  19. Adree Sangry Malcontent

The Prajna ending with the firing line is some dark shit.
  20. And the kicker is, the rules of Hanafuda don't really need a good grasp of the language!

It's also very reminiscent of old Japanese historical flicks, especially if you go out together with them in a blaze of glory. Too bad the bad guys win - seriously, Kinugawa's manipulation of local politics is master-class.
  21. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

Prajna's "real" enemy isn't Kinugawa though.. depend which firing squad ending you get, I know I got away safely and basically returned later with more Prajnas, so really isn't a lose for Prajna at end.
  22. Adree Sangry Malcontent

Doesn't really take a master when the whole town is run by dummies on every side.
  23. Adree Sangry Malcontent

Tiny protip for new people: The Black Ship is packed full of crates and barrels that often contain wine (and chocolate, and scrap) which is super handy since it gives you a decent spring harvest gauge boost and it doubles your attack for 3 minutes. It also sells for a good amount. For the barrels that are slightly out of reach use jump kicks to loot.

I just had my first online invader on Harakiri difficulty. I was pretty damn nervous... I mean, dude could have a 500 Attack Unbreakable Garuda or something, that would kill me in one good hit...

...or he could have a completely broken Last Rites sword that, even if repaired, would have had only 8 attack.

Needless to say, I tore the guy apart.... all in all, an uneventful playthrough so far.

  25. Why don't I ever encounter people like that? But on the other hand, winning a broken sword isn't exactly thrilling either.

Maybe I should try using a spear style in a new playthrough - time to think about making a good spear.
  26. Adree Sangry Malcontent

More likely they have a triple bigshot weapon (although I did get an unbreakable bigshot the other night :D ) Even a single kick from one of those will take off a huge chunk of life, any charge up attacks are nearly 100% fatal, They kind of break the game.

I went through all the effort to get all female dojo so I can get the pervert and dear god don't be a fool like me and not get sensei first on the pretense that you are going to have to kill her again for certain sword anyway because man when you get in one of those buggy situations where 3 of your students run at you and go "MASTER WE NEED YOUR HELP" *BONG* A STUDENT HAS DIED *BONG* A STUDENT HAS DIED *BONG* A STUDENT HAS DIED knowing that resetting the consulate to get blondie knights is a supreme pain in the ass.... agh
  27. Adree Sangry Malcontent

Is your crime rate low? At the lowest rating I hardly ever see phantoms, when I got back to normal I encountered them occasionally.
  28. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

I can't figure out how to reset a zone, walking out and coming back doesn't seem to work, I still see my students walking around in both consulate and the town area..

They get absolutely insane with Shinobi style, though... all those projectile moves count as guard break hits, which trigger Big Shot.

To be fair, though, all x3 charmed weapons break the game a bit... but considering the work you need to do to get a x3 charmed weapon, it sorta balances out. Then there's Harakiri, where 'broken' tactics become downright necessary to survive.

There's nothing you can do to combat that, there's a set amount of types that can spawn in a room and your students can fill up those slots from what I can gather is some insane belief that a player would want a squad of sycophants squealing and following you around. The only upside is that non-students do have a chance to spawn no matter what (usually questgivers who can be enslaved just as easily.)
  31. Oh no, I encounter phantoms quite regularly, and they're all pretty much deadly. What I meant was that I haven't ever encountered one with a broken sword.
  32. Adree Sangry Malcontent

I should log out every night with a fish, at least it'll be amusing to the other players.
  33. Adree Sangry Malcontent

Good lord, even with my cheat-sword I just had my ass handed to me with a character wearing cat hands using the same Iai stance I like. Ate 3 medicines and then I still couldn't break her even with a full blossom meter. I'll be visiting the revenge horse tonight and having another go at her.
  34. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

I usually load up with super mushroom, pop a pepper than go at them, if it doesn't look like they gonna die, I pop another mushroom during the spring harvest, you can extend your time by a lot...

Yeah... I've found that Iai and Shinobi style using invaders are some of the hardest to beat.

Incidentally, if any of you guys run into my AI invader, let me know; my PSN ID's the same as my BF handle.

Did you know you can set your comment on PSN and apparently it will show up when you engage the invader? I had one guy shout "SPEAK THAI" at me. One thing I'm learning is that I should either dress as outlandishly as possible or be a real douche and mimic an enemies appearance (one of my past playthroughs I basically wore a constable uniform and still nearly run into myself all the time)

Also kitten-hands had a strong sword (256 damage on normal) but with only two L&D charms. Hilarious to fight though, it was just alternating zombie-walks or the move where you turn your back and dare the enemy to hit you.
  37. Out of curiosity, do you guys ever run into invaders from the Japanese versions (their names & weapons will likely be in Japanese too)? I'm starting to suspect you guys will never see my invader :(
  38. Adree Sangry Malcontent

Looking up peoples PSN ids it looks like I have at least two invaders from England and one from Ireland. So there's always hope?
  39. Adree Sangry Malcontent

Game are you really telling me the one time I pick up a sword and (as always) accidentally launch it at someone it strikes one of my students square in the face and makes them quit? Sigh.
  40. Nah, they're probably also playing the english localized version of the game :(

Hey, if you were that student you'd want to quit too. What an abusive Shisho :p
