I am moving to an apartment in Ventura, CA, which is not a rural area, and I want broadband. I don't need TV or a landline phone, just broadband. AT&T is the big DSL provider in the area, but for reasons they can't explain, can't serve my particular address. The apartment complex is only a couple of years old, maybe that's part of the problem. Time Warner is the cable provider, but my experience with their customer service trying to place an order was bad enough that I canceled it. Also, they are stupid expensive. I'll go with them if I absolutely have to, but I really don't want to and I don't see why I should have to. And that's all I can find. I don't know what to do. I've never had this problem before, where I just could not find Internet service. HELP! PLEASE!
Welcome to cable company monopolies. Your basically effed, you have Time Warner for Cable Internet, or you could possibly try Satellite, but I don't know if it's available, or what kind of speeds you get.
Yup. I'm stuck with Charter in my area. I never thought I'd have to deal with someone worse than Comcast for my TV/Interwebs, but yea. Charter, with it's monopoly on cable services just makes sure you pay full price and thank them for it too. If you don't like it you can suffer through DSL instead.
Look for deals on the TW stuff, you can usually find cheaper prices on cable if you look hard. I've had Comcast 5Mbps for $29-$45 a month for the last two years, and it lists at like $70. But they are your only choice. They're better than DSL anyway (and not more evil than ATAT), but if you can't get DSL you don't even have the pretense of a choice.
You have to. So, there's your answer. Welcome to the suck. I live in Los Angeles and once I year I do a price comparison to see if it makes sense to take at least part of my Internet/TV bundle away from TWC and to a different provider or provider. Unfortunately I think the best DSL I could get is like 512k down, and the price bump from unbundling TV from TWC cable Internet is significant. So I'm basically stuck with them for both Internet and TV unless I want to pay an extra $30 or $40 a month or something total.
