So I have my PC set to back up all the files in my Libraries (Documents/Pictures/Music/Videos) every week to my external HD, and it saves it as a backup file.

Just so I understand it correctly - if I were to rebuild a new Windows 7 PC from scratch, I should be able to restore the contents of those Libraries to the new PC, right?

Sure, though I never trust a backup.file solution over something that copies over all individual files, and then copies only new or modified files.

Hah. Turns out to have been a moot point anyway - external HD just fried itself, giving a cyclic redundancy check error and can't even be read. Thankfully, I have backed up individual files to a separate internal drive.

It's a good thing I'm building a new PC, literally everything is failing at the same time on my current one.
