Hell yeah, especially if you have a medium. I've had a few where I shark 3-4 kills by just going to where I know I'll be able to flank some people heading on their way through to the cap. People are even worse at defending arty as well in this mode.

If your tank moves well, you can easily head up an undefended corridor to their spawn, gank the arty, then turn around and come upon the rear of their tanks that went to the cap.

It will all settle down soon. The maps had gotten de_dust like in their level of predictability for what each team would most likely do, or the 3-4 valid options open to you for effective play. It's all thrown up in the air again for a little while now.

3-4 ain't so bad, Swamp had one and Komarin had like... 0.5.

I don't konw, I'm QQ'ng much more frequently now with these new modes. I really don't care for them to be honest as 90% of the time it's an elimination win and the new modes are making people play with too much stupidity.
  4. I am still just trundling on playing it like counter strike- play some matches, some good some bad. Insult half the people on my team one game, next game everybody is cracking jokes.

I play all T5-T8 tanks though. Lots more T10s than there used to be

Ya, I'd agree with you there. Lots of battles where there are 3 T10's, 5 T9's, and then my 8 or 7 or 6, depending upon the tank I'm playing.

    I have T9 / T10 from the IS-4 upgrade to T10, but I'm enjoying my AMX 50 100.

Probably nobody cares but me, but the Burning Donut War is over! Per the terms of the armistice, the SCC will cede much of the territory around the Black Sea to the Burning Legion.

Pretty serious deal starting today. First time I've ever seen Tier 9 tanks on sale. Wish they'd had this when I was still playing. Pretty sure I had an IS-3 and maybe enough free experience to get the IS-8 so maybe it'd be worth logging in for this. Hmm.

I've started up on this, I haven't played since the old physics. Got to say, I really enjoy the new physics, I've done some crazy jumps and busted up my tank, I've backed up and fallen off of stuff, and I've pushed other tanks. It's good stuff.

Not sure how I feel about the premium ammo being available for silver. Makes me wonder about some of the absolutely devastating hits I've taken, like getting my engine destroyed on the first shot. Though I suppose I could buy it too now, so, yay? It makes premium accounts even more worthwhile I suppose, since they tend to make gobs more silver.
  9. It used to be firing gold ammo made the bullet trail turn blue, does it still do that?
  10. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

To be honest, I didn't notice, I'll keep an eye out in the future.

I've poked my head back in after not playing for several months and the new physics along with I think new shooting sounds do make the game feel a lot more fun.

I really feel like they dialled the cash shop up to 11 though. I think at most I'll drop in and dink around with my collection of T6 to T7 tanks, maybe buy a Tiger II and just enjoy tank battles and try and ignore the economy / levelling / hamster wheel / cash shop.

This is coming from a guy who owns a Type 59 as well!

The gold for credits change has made T9/T10 battles brutal. Almost everyone is packing gold rounds. Matches have devolved into camping-fests and anyone foolish enough to charge out solo are cut down in one or two shots. Getting a lot more matches now where we win 15/0 or lose 0/15.

I cannot for the life of me figure out the role of the mid tier british tanks. They appear to just be terrible, and throw a lot of terrible shells around quickly.

The tier 5 Churchill is freaking amazing. Haven't been too impressed with the T5 med (crusader?) or cromwell so far, but have only played a couple games with the cromwell.
  15. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Restarted to play British tanks. Yay! Up to T4s at the moment, well all apart from the Valentine that I haven't unlocked.

Matilda with the squeeze barrel 2lber is fun. Can penetrate anything it comes against, but does very little damage. Grinding for crit hit perk is the obvious answer... I've had major influence on battles by critting opposing KVs, even if DPS is low. The T3 light tank is good for its tier. T4 A13 is very good if in a low tier battle (double tap 2lber chews through T3's and 4's) but struggles if against higher stuff. T3 A10 with 3.7" gun is like a mini KV2, well, apart from having no armour. But if you do manage to hit something, they evaporate.

Looking at the stats - Crusader looks similar to M7, but faster. Cromwell looks similar to M4E8, but faster. So basically scouts/ flankers

And of course, there is the argument that British tanks were terrible, at least until the Comet... So historically accurate

After a couple more games with the Cromwell I think it's okay. maxed out it has great acceleration and reasonable speed. The gun has good penetration but low punch, and aim time isn't super forgiving. Reminds me more of the T34-85 but with a longer ass that makes it trickier to play the circling tank bit with.
  17. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Must admit, still a fan of lower tiers. Highest tier tank I have is T7 T25AT, which is nice, but mostly I stick to T4-6, especially as I enjoying (trying) to scout.
  18. Viz This Is SEWIOUS

I don't know that I agree with that; I think tier 10 matches have always tended towards campfests, and that the fact that matches are getting more lopsided has more to do with tier 10 TDs than gold rounds.
  19. Supper's Ready Hivemind Coordinator

I free xp-ed my way to the Cromwell (tier 6) and was not impressed. It's a Sherman E8 with poorer aiming time (no vertical stabilizer either) but more penetration/damage.

The next one in that line, the Comet, is pretty mediocre for tier 7, mainly due to a gun inadequate for that tier. Everything else about the tank is great, but that peashooter of a gun really brings it down from what it could be (it should have the OQF 17-pdr Gun Mk. VII found on the Centurion Mk I, which no one will ever research, what with the OQF 20-pdr Type A Barrel being available).

The Centurion (Mk I) in tier 8, is like the M26 Pershing+. I love driving it, though it is slower than I like my mediums, that 20-pdr gun, maneuverability and gun depression more than make up for it. It's the best gun among tier 8 mediums combined with American-style gun depression, which believe me is a winning recipe.

Overall the Brit medium line reminds me of the Russian medium line - mediocre tanks until T8, when it suddenly takes off.
  20. Itzena Oh, Come On

I'm still waiting for the Sherman Firefly & Achilles TD.

E: Basically, give me the QF 17pdr is what I'm saying.
  21. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

I would say that the T4 UK tanks are all more than decent, compared to other T4's. Valentine is a good support tank (latch on to a KV/ T1/ Churchill and cover their flanks/ shoot at whatever they are shooting at) 6lber & 75mm are both OK for their tier. A13 is a terror against same tier tanks, but does struggle if at the bottom of the MM - have to swtich to anti-scout duty. Matilda is a good plinker. 121mm penetration and 55 damage gives good DPS as the firing rate is high.

Oddly enough, they all work better than "real life" because of the lack of AT guns, which the 2lber & 6lber struggled with. Faced with just tanks, both are effective. Your speed, or lack of it, between the cruiser tanks & infantry tank lines gives you a very clearly defined role with UK T4's - you are either trundling behind a heavy, picking off their scraps, or zooming around hgh speed dogfighting.

Man fuck this game now. I used to really enjoy it. Now they seem to have introduced several new places to get stuck on their old maps and have introduced awful ping/lag. No thanks.

personally, I am loving the map and physics rework and have had no lag or ping issues. I had a video card issue but their tech support was able to get it sorted out for me. sorry you seem to be having trouble.
  24. brettmcd Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Have they fixed the matchmaking for lower tiers? When I used to play I was always being put with tanks so far above me I had pretty much zero change of damaging them at all (other then a % here or there with HE ammo). Made for extremely frustrating game play.
  25. Kurik Hivemind Coordinator

Happily, they recently reworked the matchmaking tier spreads. You're now going to see enemies 2 tiers above you at most (except when playing as artillery, or one of the tier-4 or -5 scout tanks). I used to consider it the #1 most significant issue with the game, but (aside from when playing some of the slowest, most undergunned tanks) haven't really found it to be a problem since.
  26. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Yep, the MM is now much tighter, and for normal tanks (so not dedicated scouts or RPG) the spread of tiers is now 3. Sometimes you will be overmatched/ overwhelming, but fairly rare
  27. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Unlocked Churchill I,and forgot the basic rule of WOT. Never use a stock tank, always wait until have enough xp to get at least first tier of upgrades. Driving it around with a 2lber was an exercise in futilty. Still, now that I have got proper gun/tracks/turret on it (but not yet the top gun) it is OK. Not as good as the KV1, but better than T1 (have never tried BDR) Main advantage is the insane DPM, main disadvantage is speed, and slab armour.
  28. Kurik Hivemind Coordinator

Personally I found that on the Churchill I, I actually preferred the 6 pdr Gun Mk. V (L/50) over the "best gun", on account of the abysmal gun depression you get with the latter. Not a fan of tanks that can be defeated by a slight slope. The 6-pounder has better DPM too, although the low penetration means it's not much use against most tier-7 tanks. It's a shame the Churchill VII has no viable gun option that doesn't have awful gun depression.
  29. Viz This Is SEWIOUS

While I understand the sentiment (fuck the IS-8), the Churchill is emphatically not a vehicle for any kind of fancy maneuvering. It's a get-up-there-and-slug-it-out tank. The lack of gun depression would be a much more serious liability if it weren't for the fact that the Churchill is reasonably well-armored (fuck you, IS-8, for reals).
  30. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Yep, I haven't yet unlucked the HV gun on the Churchill I, but have switched to the 6lber rather than the 75mm now that I have gun laying drive for the extra penetration. Conversely, have switched the other way on the Valentine (now mostly using 75mm) Reason is that I play the Valentine as a wingman, and at T4 the extra penetration of the 6lber is rarely as important as hitting stuff hard & crippling them.

Churchill does have decent accuracy, so you don't have to get into people's faces with it, you can happily pick people off at range
  31. Supper's Ready Hivemind Coordinator

I want to try the British heavy line too (now at Centurion Mk 7 on the medium line), but, I don't think I can mentally handle tanks that move at 20kph. And there's like three of them to grind through.
  32. Lokust Oh, Come On

    Location:

I'm at the Church mk V7 and it's pretty enjoyable to drive, but once you commit to an area, you're definitely not going to get anywhere else in a hurry. It makes maneuver heavy maps kind of painful but it's fun in the more urban settings.
  33. wisbechlad Hard Cider Gal

Churchill I and Crusader now fully tech'ed up. Play the Churchill as a sniper & go KV hunting, with the HV gun & binoculars. Crusader, playing it like an M7 (so counter scout/ passive scout/ flanker) But doesn't feel like a tank that you are likely to make a difference with.

Cruiser I with pom pom is my troll tank. 70% win rate... And everyone expects a T18 or PzII to be a troll tank, a Cruiser I, not so much... But it can take out anything with one burst, with the exception of T18's frontally.
  34. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

playing a stock su-14 so far is akin to getting kick repeatably in the ball. I literally can't move fast enough or far enough on some maps before the light or medium arrives and scout me out at base..

In one game it literally took me 3 minutes to setup and fire my first shot in a SU-14, after getting 203mm gun, I still move like a snail but at least I can one shot tier 8 heavies..

    P.S.

in a couple games, I had my platoon mate push me with a lowe.. it was very embarrassing. we even had one game with a train of 3 tanks pushing me into place..
  35. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Oh, hey, welcome to my world, I'm the S-51, which is the same tier. I have enough experience to move up, I'm just not clear of any advantage to doing so.
  36. Lokust Oh, Come On

    Location:
    Central MI
Unfortunately the SU-14 is worse than the S-51 in every way except ammo capacity. Even what you think would be a defensive benefit (being enclosed to protect crew) ends up a liability because it's more surface area to get hit on.

I have maxed out both of them. I went through SU-14 to the Obj.212 and later went from the KV to the S-51 just to have a tier 6 arty for company battles. The 212 moves fairly well into position and has a ton of ammo capacity so you can carry whatever you like and not be able to fire it all off before 15 minutes expires.
  37. JoshV Keeper of the Elemental Materials

Oh, interesting, is that the difference, not really worth it. I think I can count the number of times I ran out of ammo, and it mattered, on one hand. And I wouldn't need all my fingers either.

The depressing part is the 212 doesn't look like it gets a better gun, so I fail to see the real point of upgrading to it.
  38. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

I think it's a downgrade for s-51 but upgrade for me.
  39. Lokust Oh, Come On

    Location:
    Central MI
The 212 gives you a little better ROF and enough HP to survive a splash from enemy arty. Unfortunately you don't get the free vents effect that you get from open topped stuff like the S-51. I would swear the aim time is a little better, maybe from slower, smoother track traverse and a bit more gun traverse speed, but I could be imagining that.

I didn't really feel like it's worse than either of the T6's. Hardly a big jump though. Honestly I think the S-51 is probably OP for the tier.

It's the path to the 261 though so I went through the 212 grind. The 261 is such a completely different beast after playing all other soviet arty that it's a serious paradigm shift to learn to use it well. If I had to do it all over again I'd probably have just gone as far as the S-51 and took another arty line to top tier. The 261 has moments where it is awesome but the flat trajectory makes it truly awful on some maps.
  40. idris_z I Pretty Much Live Here

I just don't get why they place a superior SPG in the tank line instead arty line for soviet..
